Accessibility at GNVLOOP
Last reviewed: October 1, 2026
GNVLOOP is a community guide, and a community includes people who browse with a
screen reader, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text and stronger contrast. We
want the site to work for all of them. This page says where we actually stand —
including what still doesn't work.
Found something you can't use? Email
accessibility@gnvloop.com and tell
us what happened and what you were using. We read every one of these, and we'll
reply. If you'd rather not email, the Contact form on the site reaches the same
person.
Standard we're working to
We aim for WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are partially
conformant: most of the site meets that standard, and the known exceptions
are listed below rather than left for you to discover.
What we've fixed
As of the October 2026 review:
- Text contrast. Body and label text meets the 4.5:1 minimum
against every panel colour we use. Several greys that failed as low as 1.5:1
were replaced.
- Text size. No text on the site is smaller than about 13px,
and the layout no longer scrolls sideways on narrow phones.
- Form labels. Every form field is programmatically associated
with its label, so screen readers announce what each field is for.
- Keyboard operation. Controls that used to be plain clickable
areas — filter tags, saved-item chips, chapter links, the weather toggle — are
now real buttons. They can be reached with the Tab key, activated with Enter or
Space, and show a visible focus outline.
- Filter sections. The WHEN / WHERE / WHAT / WHO / WHY headings
in the filter sidebar are proper expand-collapse buttons that announce whether
they are open or closed.
- Help tooltips. The ⓘ explanations next to each filter used to
appear on mouse hover only. They now also appear when you reach them with the
keyboard, and can be dismissed with the Escape key.
- Images. Every image carries alternative text.
Known limitations
These are real and we haven't fixed them yet:
- No "skip to content" link. Keyboard users must tab past the
navigation on every page load.
- Heading structure. The main page has no top-level heading and
its heading levels don't form a clean outline, which makes it harder to navigate
by headings in a screen reader.
- Map view. The map is provided by a third-party library and we
have not assessed it. The list view shows the same events and is the accessible
route to that information.
- Video and radio players. The media players are embedded from
YouTube and our radio partners. Their controls are theirs, not ours.
- Mobile apps. This statement covers the website. Our iPhone and
Android apps have not been formally assessed.
How this was assessed
Self-assessment, carried out on October 1, 2026, combining automated checks of
the page source with testing in a real browser — keyboard tab-order walkthroughs,
contrast calculation against each background in use, and inspection of the
accessibility tree that screen readers consume. Automated checking has limits, and
we have not yet done structured testing with users of assistive technology.
If something here is out of date
We'd rather hear about it than have you work around it. Write to
accessibility@gnvloop.com. If a
problem is stopping you using the site, say so in the subject line and we'll treat
it as urgent.
